It would be easy to brush off Shoya’s plight and emotional state as ‘karma’: he deserved what he got. But A Silent Voice dares to explore his character further: what happens after he’s punished for his actions? What becomes of his home life and mental state? The answer is that over the years of being exiled and living with the crushing guilt of his actions, he has become incredibly depressed, suffering from anxiety, and is suicidal. In a lesser movie, or a movie not set around Shoya, that would be the end of his arc, the audience would assume that he has learned his lesson and that the balance is now restored. But then his world comes crashing down he gets told off by the teachers, his friends and the rest of the school completely turn on him AND his mother has to pay a huge fine for Nishimiya’s damaged hearing aids. However, A Silent Voice makes a bold move in making the bully the protagonist, and there’s no doubt that he is a bully it starts off with childish lashing out at something (or in this case, someone) that he does not understand but escalates into outright horrible behaviour that makes it incredibly hard to watch. If they do have an arc, it’s almost always them getting called out on their behaviour usually by the protagonists, then they quickly reform from their bullying ways and the world is set to rights. The role of ‘the school bully’ is normally reserved for antagonists or side characters where they, for the most part, remain one-dimensional (mean for the sake of being mean). Several years later, now in High School, Shoya crosses paths with Nishimiya once again and he slowly begins to reconnect with her, as well as make amends for his past actions. When the bullying reaches its peak, and he is punished severely for it, his friends disown him and he becomes an outcast himself. Despite her shy and friendly nature, her presence stirs Shoya’s small world and he begins to bully her, with encouragement from his friends.

The ending is probably the most contentious because it is a more realistic resolution but remains bittersweet. The way the story is told is via Tomoya reminiscing about the past and this is an interesting way to present the events as it means that we suspect what will happen. Clannad was well known for its sad emotional impact and the film doesn't quite succeed since it did not have the time to build it properly. Nagisa isn't put off by Tomoya's cold attitude and the pair, along with Tomoya's best friend, Sunohara, become good friends. The plot follows high school student Okazaki Tomoya who has nothing to look forward in life, until he meets Furukawa Nagisa on the way to school one day. Events feel familiar yet different at the same time, and so it doesn't feel like a retread. It focuses exclusively on the Nagisa route of the game and only a few characters make regular appearances. This isn't necessary a bad thing as it brings a new experience to fans already familiar with the game or anime, and is a like a different take on things. As such, there are a lot of liberties taken and while the overarching plot remains the same, it is like a completely different product. At only one and a half hours long, it had to massively truncate both the high school and After Story portion in order to fit it into a theatrical length. Clannad is an anime film that is based on the visual novel of the same name, and actually came out just a bit before the anime series.
